A Look at Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been in the headlines for a number of high-profile government initiatives and political developments. His administration has focused on a wide range of issues, from economic growth and infrastructure to immigration and anti-corruption measures.

Recent Political and Governance Developments

In a notable move, the Assam government, under Sarma’s leadership, has begun to strictly implement the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, which gives district commissioners the authority to identify and expel illegal foreign nationals. The state has also intensified its crackdown against infiltrators, with Sarma stating the government is taking a “two-front approach” that goes beyond daily pushback operations.

Sarma recently made statements regarding a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report that he described as “explosive.” The report, which is 96 pages long, was formally submitted to him on September 10, 2025. According to Sarma, the report points to an alleged “cartel” working to “demean and defame the development process” of the country. He has indicated that the report will be made public after it is discussed by the cabinet.

On the anti-corruption front, a senior Assam Civil Service officer was recently arrested by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell. Sarma stated that the officer had amassed wealth that was 400 times her known income. The Chief Minister has asked the public to be vigilant and report any officials who ask for bribes.

Key Development Initiatives

The Sarma administration has been active in promoting economic development and social welfare. The state government has set a target of achieving a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of $143 billion by 2030, supported by a $12 billion infrastructure investment plan.

In the education sector, the government is expanding its efforts to uplift remote areas. Eighty new model schools are set to be established in tea garden areas, and a ‘School Breakfast Programme’ is being considered. The government has also launched a mission, the “Dharti Aba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan,” to address social infrastructure, healthcare, and education gaps in tribal villages. Other initiatives include providing financial assistance to micro-enterprises, and schemes for youth entrepreneurship and skill development.
