Prime Minister's Schemes: A Decade of Transformative Policies

Over the past decade, a wide-ranging series of schemes and initiatives launched by the Prime Minister’s office has sought to reshape India’s socio-economic landscape. From financial inclusion and healthcare to infrastructure development and rural upliftment, these programs have aimed to address long-standing challenges and foster inclusive growth.

Financial Inclusion and Social Security

A cornerstone of the government’s agenda has been to bring the unbanked and underserved into the formal financial system. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has been a key driver of this, with millions of new bank accounts opened since its launch. This has been complemented by social security schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) for life insurance and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for accidental death and disability cover, providing a safety net for millions of citizens with a nominal annual premium. The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) further extends this safety net by providing a pension for workers in the unorganized sector.

Healthcare for All

The government’s push for universal health coverage is most visible in the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). Hailed as the world’s largest government-funded health assurance scheme, PM-JAY provides an annual health cover of ₹5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 10 crore vulnerable families. This scheme has been instrumental in reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure for the poor.

Empowering Farmers and the Rural Economy

Recognizing the vital role of agriculture, schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) provide direct income support to landholding farmer families. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) offers comprehensive crop insurance to protect farmers against crop loss due to natural calamities. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maan Dhan Yojana offers a voluntary and contributory pension scheme for small and marginal farmers.

Infrastructure and Skill Development

Major infrastructure initiatives such as the PM Gram Sadak Yojana continue to connect rural areas with all-weather roads, while the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana aims to provide affordable housing for the urban and rural poor. In an effort to boost employment and entrepreneurship, the PM Mudra Yojana provides collateral-free loans to micro and small enterprises. The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), a flagship program under the Skill India Mission, focuses on skilling the youth to improve their employability.

Recent Initiatives and Future Outlook

In line with the focus on sustainable development, a recent initiative is the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides a subsidy for households to install rooftop solar panels, aiming to provide free electricity and reduce carbon emissions.

While these schemes have been widely lauded for their significant impact on improving the lives of citizens, they have also drawn criticism regarding their fiscal burden and implementation challenges. The government, however, maintains that these programs are crucial for building a resilient, inclusive, and self-reliant India, and they continue to be a central pillar of its policy framework.
