BTC Elections Set for Sept 22; Counting on Sept 26 — BJP to Go It Alone This Time
The State Election Commission has officially announced that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls will take place on September 22, with vote counting scheduled for September 26. The so-called Model Code of Conduct is now in force across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), which includes Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, and Tamulpur districts.
These elections carry more weight than just local governance. With over 26.5 lakh registered voters — an increase of about 11.35% since 2020 — and 3,359 polling stations, there’s a palpable sense that this could reshape the political field.
What’s New this Time
- Voter turnout might be influenced by a sharper gender balance: about 34 lakh women, 13.23 lakh men, and a small number of voters identifying as third-gender.
- Campaign spending has been capped: each candidate can spend up to ₹10 lakh.
- More polling stations have been added — a move aimed at making voting more accessible and transparent.
Political Stakes & Players
This election is being watched closely because it might signal shifts in alliance politics, especially with the bigger State Assembly elections coming up
- BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is taking a big step: unlike in 2020, this time it has chosen to go it alone, not joining its previous partners.
- UPPL (United Peoples’ Party Liberal), which was part of the governing coalition with BJP and GSP, will now have to defend its record without direct BJP support.
- GSP (Gana Suraksha Party) remains a wildcard, with relatively fewer seats previously, but with potential to influence outcomes
- BPF (Bodoland Peoples’ Front), which had ruled the BTC for three straight terms before being ousted in 2020, is trying to make a comeback.
It will really be fascinating to see who will be come out as the sole winner at this year’s BTC Elections, 2025.
