Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a significant two-day visit to Assam, a trip that underscored the central government’s commitment to the development of the Northeast and paid a rich tribute to one of the region’s most beloved cultural icons. The visit, part of a wider tour of five states, saw the inauguration and laying of foundation stones for a diverse range of projects worth over $2.2 billion, alongside a poignant celebration of a musical legend.

A Tribute to a Maestro

Modi’s visit began on Saturday with a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer and cultural icon, Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, on the occasion of his 100th birth anniversary. The Prime Minister participated in a special celebration in Guwahati, where he lauded Hazarika’s immense contribution to music, literature, and the promotion of national unity.

In a symbolic gesture, Modi released a commemorative coin of Rs 100 and a biography of the maestro, “Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.” The event featured a grand musical tribute by 1,200 artists, who performed a medley of 18 of Hazarika’s timeless songs. In his address, the Prime Minister emphasized how Bhupen Hazarika’s songs transcended language and regional barriers, serving as a powerful force for national integration. He noted that even during difficult times of neglect and violence in the Northeast, Hazarika’s voice continued to champion the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.”

Inauguration of Key Infrastructure and Industrial Projects

The second day of the visit was dedicated to a major developmental push, with the Prime Minister inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for a series of transformative projects across the state. The initiatives, collectively valued at over $2.2 billion, are aimed at strengthening Assam’s healthcare sector, enhancing connectivity, and boosting its industrial landscape.

Key projects for which foundation stones were laid include:

Healthcare: The Darrang Medical College & Hospital, along with a new nursing college and a GNM school, which will significantly bolster medical education and healthcare services in the region.

Connectivity: The Guwahati Ring Road Project and the Narengi-Kuruwa bridge over the Brahmaputra River. These projects are designed to ease urban congestion, improve mobility, and connect different parts of the state.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated significant industrial projects, most notably at the Numaligarh Refinery in the Golaghat district. These included:

Bio-Refinery: The country’s first bamboo-based bio-ethanol plant, a major step towards promoting clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Petrochemicals: The foundation stone for a new Polypropylene Plant, which is expected to give a major boost to Assam’s petrochemical sector and create new employment opportunities.

A Vision for a “Viksit Northeast”

During his public addresses in Mangaldoi and Numaligarh, the Prime Minister reiterated his government’s focus on the development of the Northeast. He stated that the projects are part of the larger vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) and will contribute significantly to the economic and social upliftment of the region.

The visit, marked by a blend of cultural celebration and developmental announcements, was widely seen as a strong signal of the central government’s commitment to bringing the Northeast into the mainstream of India’s growth story. The projects are expected to generate employment, improve living standards, and provide a strong foundation for a prosperous and self-reliant Assam.
